Case Study
WWT NRPs Significantly Reduced Torque in ERD Well
Executive Summary
The operator contacted WWT to perform a torque and drag analysis for a 7,712 m ERD well, with the objective of reducing torque while drilling the 8-1/2” x 9-1/4” section. A total of 264 x SS3-578 NRPs were installed at a frequency of one per joint to cover areas of highest side forces in the build section.
NRP Performance
Surface torque showed a decreasing trend as soon as the NRPs entered the hole. As the NRPs gradually covered more of the area of concern, torque was further reduced until reaching TD.
Simulations predicted a 25% reduction in torque at TD with NRPs installed, while back-modelled data showed an actual overall torque reduction of 36%.
